Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea) affect up to 90% of women at some point. In Ayurveda, painful menstruation is primarily an Apana Vata imbalance — the downward-moving energy becoming obstructed or aggravated. This remedy combines ginger, which research suggests is as effective as ibuprofen for menstrual pain, with Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), the premier female reproductive tonic in Ayurveda. Shatavari nourishes the reproductive tissues and has antispasmodic properties that ease uterine cramping. The addition of warming jaggery and fennel further helps relax smooth muscle and improve blood flow to the pelvic region.

Ingredients

  • Water1.5 cups
  • Fresh Ginger1 inch piece, grated
  • Fennel Seeds1/2 tsp
  • Shatavari Powder1/2 tsp
  • Jaggery or Palm Sugar1 tsp

Dosage Guidance

Simmer grated ginger and fennel seeds in water for 8—10 minutes. Strain and stir in Shatavari powder and jaggery. Drink warm 2—3 times on the first day of menstruation and continue for 2—3 days. For preventive benefit, start drinking daily 3 days before expected onset. Pair with a warm water bottle on the lower abdomen and gentle movement.

Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner or healthcare provider for personalized dosage recommendations.

Contraindications & Warnings
